Labrador retriever

Labradors retriever - dogs that attract attention to themselves, wherever they appear. Beautiful, spectacular, with a good disposition, this is just the case when appearance and temperament are absolutely combined. Retrievers have high performance combined with perfect companion qualities. Where did these amazing dogs come from?

History of breed origin

Scientists still have not been able to fully determine the origin of this breed. But there is information that the first dogs came to the territory of England from the shores of Canada, more precisely the island of Newfoundland. Therefore, initially they were called by the name of the island and the city of the same name.

There are several theories of the origin of these dogs. According to one of them, they descended from Newfoundland dogs. But Dr. Woods offers another version, according to which the formation of the breed took place on the island and Basque and Viking dogs took an active part in its creation. Life on the island has left its mark on the habits of dogs. They are very fond of water and agree to work even on land, even in water.

Fishermen of Newfoundenda needed a four-legged assistant - a small one, so that he could board the boat on his own and get out of it, equipped with water-repellent wool, with a developed search instinct and high performance.

At that time, two types of animals developed on the island - small Newfoundland dogs and large. Large dogs were used as draft power. But at the beginning of the 19th century, they began to be taken out of the island for English aristocrats, as large-sized dogs with long hair became fashionable. They kept the original name of the island.

Small dogs were quite miniature, had a short, waterproof coat, dexterity and energy. They loved water and had a unique scent. They were called differently: and Lesser St. Johns, Lesser-Newfoundlands, and, which surprises researchers - Labradors.

Large dogs - Newfoundlands are still representatives of a fairly common breed, and small dogs became the founders of modern breeds of retriever, including Labradors.

The unique qualities of the Labradors - the ability to stay on the water and a docile character, noted athletes from England. When the fashion for hunting birds from the pheasant family appeared, the setter and point were often replaced by retrievers. But then no one watched the purity of the species, and the owners received offspring from individuals with short and long hair.

Since 1830, small dogs (St. Johns, aka Labradors) began to be exported from the island to England for breeding as a separate breed. At that time, some breeders already began to adhere to certain rules, trying to preserve natural data. But many were engaged in experiments, bringing Labradors with other representatives of the breeds of the retriever.

At the beginning of the century, Labradors could be seen at English exhibitions. At that time, the name of the retriever included several types of dogs - retriever with long, short hair, dark chestnut retriever and Norfolk, which have already disappeared. Later, separate breeds for each species were registered, and in 1903 a separate breed Labrador Retriever was registered in the English Kennel Club.

For two decades, several large nurseries have been engaged in improving the breed, and their work is the appearance of modern Labrador Retriever.

  • with black hair;
  • pale yellow;
  • brown (chocolate, liver).

  • golden;
  • light cream tones;

Characteristics of Labrador Retriever

Labradors are intelligent and very gifted dogs. Their sharp scent and love for apportioning allows the use of representatives of this breed for official work. Dogs are able to carry out draft work, participate in hunting, and search for prohibited and dangerous substances at customs points. Labrador retrievers make excellent lifeguards in the mountains, on the water and in ordinary areas.

They are so balanced and calm that they can serve as a guide for blind people. According to statistics, this breed accounts for about 80% of all four-legged guide dogs.

And the most important qualities - dogs are distinguished by reliability, devotion and developed intelligence, which makes them unsurpassed companions. Dogs are characterized by cheerfulness and goodwill. They are always ready for contact, but do not impose their society. Surprisingly subtly capture the mood of the owner and behave very delicately.

Labradors are excellent nannies; under their supervision, you can safely leave children. These dogs are very calm and they are not affected by the bustle, the presence of strangers, children's cries, screeches and other unforeseen situations. Having fallen from "unkind" hands into a caring family, pets recover very quickly and exhibit extremely positive character traits.

But in the nature of the Labradors there is one caveat. They were bred for continuous work side by side with a person, so they experience loneliness quite acutely. Without proper attention and with prolonged solitude, they may begin to behave improperly or acquire bad habits, for example, they can bark for a long time and monotonously. Owners should take into account that this is not "harm", but a request, a prayer of a smart pet for help.

If the dog receives proper care and attention from the owner, then its behavior is almost exemplary. Naturally, we are talking about adults, puppies are playful and lively creatures. Yes, future owners should be warned - the period of growing up with Labradors is quite long.

Having passed socialization and training courses, Labradors can coexist peacefully with any other pets. They are very peaceful creatures by nature and communication with their own kind gives them great pleasure.

Purebred representatives are omnivores. In addition, they have a tendency to steal food. And they use other methods for food extraction (asking eyes, paws on the knee, and other tricks) with success. Therefore, it is important for the owners not to let the dog get to the leftover food. Moreover, labradors are prone to obesity.

The pet should be given significant physical activity so that it does not get bored and does not begin to look for a "lesson" on its own. Labradors are not guards. Yes, they can rush towards the people who came and bark loudly at the same time, but they do so with good intentions to greet the guests.

The mind and smartness of these dogs greatly facilitates the training process. They respond to any encouragement, be it a treat, a toy or a kind word. They should be trained as early as possible, as they can quickly lose control.

Experts warn that dogs of such a complexion should be taught to walk on a leash at an early age, since subsequently it will be very difficult to keep the Labrador pulling the leash. These dogs clearly show a desire to please the owner, therefore, the owner is only required to apply methods of consistent training.

Features of care and maintenance

In care Labradors do not require any special manipulations, however, there are still some nuances. For example, these dogs molt all year round, so regular combing of the hair with a comb is necessary. This should be done 2-3 times a week.

Love for the water element, with the usual walking, can lead to spontaneous bathing in puddles. After such walks, the pet should be washed in the shower and patted with a cloth with a pile. Moisture in the ears can cause the development of infectious ailments, therefore, after water procedures, the ears should be wiped dry, and if necessary, use special hygiene products. Labradors also need daily brushing. It is advisable to cut the nails of the dog 3 times a month.

Choosing a place for a dimensional pet, it is worth considering that a dark corner, somewhere in the backyards, will not suit a pet. Labradors like to be in the center of events, and they need an overview of everything that happens in the apartment. They do not need any barriers and houses; dogs are not timid dogs. A large litter, on which the dog could stretch to its full height, is quite suitable for them.

Feed the dog with meat, and cereals should be a quarter of the ration. It is also necessary to include in the menu supplements that are beneficial for the joints. When choosing ready-made rations, preference should be given to premium, super-premium, holistic feed for large dogs.

How much does a labrador retriever puppy cost

A suitable age for selling a puppy is 1.5 months. No self-respecting breeder will offer offspring that have not reached this age. The cost of a thoroughbred puppy with the brand of a kennel, a pedigree and all necessary documents varies from 30,000 to 65,000 rubles. Naturally, the price depends on the class of the dog.

You can buy a purebred puppy, but not having puppy cards, for 10,000-12,000 rubles. Puppies, offered much cheaper in private announcements, are a real "pig in a poke" and no guarantees can be obtained about their belonging to the breed.

The Labrador Retriever is the perfect dog for a large, friendly family. He will be fine with all, without exception, family members. However, such a pet needs attention, care and love.
